Their solution to the question? Date each other for forty days. Both Jessica and Timothy have self-professed relationship issues—him with commitment issues and her with over-commitment issues—and both have found themselves single. The plan is to jump into a full-scale committed relationship, go to couples therapy, and complete a survey at the end of each of the forty days. To me, however, it seemed like 40 Days of Dating was less like an experiment and more like a train wreck where nobody could look away.

But everyone learns from mistakes—even when they seem to be made intentionally. So to say that I learned nothing from 40 Days of Dating would be a lie. Here’s what I took away from the ordeal, despite itself.

The beautifully constructed website—which went live in mid-July—chronicles the experiment of two long-time friends fed up with the New York City dating scene who begin a relationship told through a series of daily blog posts. If virtually every recent article written about modern relationships is to be believed, casual hookups are rapidly replacing more familiar dating practices. That is not the case here. Instead, Walsh and Goodman jumped headlong into a fully formed relationship, complete with weekly couples therapy sessions.

The website has received so much attention over the summer that Walsh and Goodman signed with talent agency CAA. And the detail with which Walsh and Goodman chronicle each day they spend together through responses to a series of daily questions is unparalleled. The actual arc of their relationship, however, is nothing experimental. Reading the blog entries reveals far greater nuance, but the problems they face are not particularly original.

Barely a week after Walsh resolves to quit the experiment, the two have sex for the first time and by the time they head down to Disney World on Day 38 for their rules-mandated getaway, the two appear fully committed to each other. But and stop me if this sounds familiar by Day 39, things have taken a turn for the disastrous, with both unsure about the future of the relationship.

Friday is the 40th and final day. A tip of the hat if the story ends with one or both of them running through the Orlando airport and sharing an embrace in the final entry.

When we spoke with Timothy for his digital interview, the project had already debuted. In many ways, it has clearly been good, but was doing it good for my design career? Jessica : 40 Days of Dating made me rethink my career and the way I work. Timothy : I recently heard a great quote by Lena Dunham. What was the most important lesson you learned about relationships, romantic or not, from the project?

These were the questions raised by 40 Days of Dating, a website created this summer by Jessica Walsh, 26, and Timothy Goodman, 32, two.

Now the original blog, along with heart-wrenching new journal entries from the months following, becomes the book, 40 Days of Dating: An Experiment Abrams. Friends first, they both thought 40 days of sincere dating might help them break some long-standing romantic habits.

They agreed to a set of rules to keep the project intact, one of which was to keep daily journal entries. When they later decided to unspool the story online, they commissioned dozens of hand-lettered illustrations from friends to accompany the text. It was a new kind of storytelling, like a carefully considered web reality show.

The project took the internet by storm, as they say, racking up some 15 million viewers and a deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment to turn it into a movie. You already published the blog online and you have a movie deal in the works. Jessica: When we started we really had no idea how 40 Days would be taken. We thought people in the design industry might be interested, but we had no idea it was going to go viral and be read by 15 million people.

The Great Discontent

They were hoping to mellow each other out, I guess, and in so doing give the voyeurism-hungry internet a glimpse into the inner machinations of a blossoming relationship.

Days book picks right about and cries on till about a year later. It also has friends thoughts on love dating brief commentaries. They were so funny. While I experiment liked the book, I have to say by day 10 I was ready days t I randomly came across this book never having heard dating the blog.

Today marks the last day of the “40 Days of Dating” experiment, a forced courtship blog run by two successful, telegenic graphic designer friends who decided to very publicly try dating each other. Eh, I feel bad calling Jessica insufferable; she’s just not my type of gal. We are so wrong for each other in so many ways, and so right for each other in many other ways. But Tim! Tim is such a dick to her. He writes endlessly about how neurotic and complicated Jessica is without realizing that he’s the hopelessly messed-up one. For example, on Day 34 — that’s like a year of intimacy in real dating time — Jessica mentions to him that a girl he briefly dated might be at a party they’re attending.

Tim irrationally freaks out and goes into this rant about how Jessica is a devious manic pixie “tricky girl”:. The tricky girl will unknowingly rip your heart out, cut it into little pieces, and then ask you, politely, if she can feed you.

One of the most rewarding and surprising aspects of the result of releasing the blog was that we connected to people and started a dialogue about love and relatinoships Ultimately, we knew that our stories and issues were not unlike a lot of people’s issues.
